JANUARY (7th)
The speaker for the evening Elizabeth Uden, a Community Banker from Nat West Bank (partners of the Friends against Scams campaign) gave lots of information and advice about different types of scams and ways to protect yourself. There were plenty of questions, shared experiences and discussion amongst members during the talk.

2019
JANUARY
Stuart Flitton who gave a fascinating and entertaining talk on "The Press: How it has changed and how it is changing". He explained he started his career as a journalist 40 years ago in South Africa but then returned to the UK where he has worked for a variety of newspapers both nationals and local press and is now a freelance journalist working at Woking News & Mail. Stuart explained the different roles within the newspaper industry of all the various editors, sub editors and journalists and also the effects that modern technology has had on newspapers.

FEBRUARY
Hector Gilchrist who gave a brief talk on the history of "Folk Songs of the British Isles" together with how he was introduced to folk music as a young child in Scotland. He said there were various folk groups around Surrey. He then performed a series of songs from around the British Isles telling members the stories behind the songs before he performed them.
​
MARCH - LinkAble "Supporting people with learning disabilities" (practical).
Members spent time enjoying different activities set up by LinkAble which gave them an insight to the various disabilities both physical and learning, as well as autism, that members of LinkAble might experience.

APRIL
Paul Patton gave a presentation ‘Show Time’ – behind the scenes build up to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. A flower show has been held in London since 1862 at various sites and has been held at Chelsea since 1913. Paul explained that the show gardens contain nothing artificial and are a mixture of traditional, contemporary and extreme. Paul presented many slides including some of the show gardens from early stages of the hard landscaping to the finished garden with all the planting.

MAY - Resolution Meeting
Following a lively discussion about the two Resolutions for 2019 members agreed to support both 'Decline in local bus services' and 'Don't fear the smear'. During the refreshment break members enjoyed the tasty cheese straws made by members as entries in the Eileen Service Memorial Plate competition. Julie was the 2019 winner of this award. Members were then challenged to identify photographs of celebrities with the team of Cecile, Brenda and Marie naming most.

JUNE
Claire Fecher gave us a fascinating talk/demonstration on Decorative Ribbons. She told us that what she was about to show us required very little equipment. A cake board, some towelling, needle and cotton and iron on interfacing, together with scraps of ribbons would suffice. She demonstrated weaving satin ribbons to make cushion covers, bags, waistcoats, and then went on to demonstrate using wired ribbon to make flowers and bows.

JULY
Judy Nicholson came along to show members how to do Line Dancing. The line dancing was a lot of fun with members who joined in showing skill in mastering the steps with a lot of concentration and laughter and providing entertainment to those who preferred to watch!

AUGUST - Birthday Meeting
Billy provided great entertainment with a good range of songs interspersed with anecdotes. Members were also provided with various rattles and even a plastic chicken to squeeze to play along with the music. Everyone joined in with some singing and plenty getting up and dancing.

SEPTEMBER
Dinah Warnick spoke about every decade from the 1900s up to the 1980s showing illustrations. Her presentation certainly confirmed how the role of women changed during the course of the twentieth century and how this was reflected in what they wore.
OCTOBER
Julie Paice led a craft activity making tissue paper flowers that could be used as part of an arrangement or as a present topper.

NOVEMBER
Annual meeting, Games. President's Rose Bowl Competition (a Christmas tree decoration).
Two members joined the Committee at the AGM, bringing the total to ten and the President was re-elected. A member of staff and children from The Hermitage School, plus a parent who is behind their new recycling scheme informed members about products that could be recycled and what happens to them.

DECEMBER
The Melody Gal entertained everyone with a selection of songs, including festive songs with many members enjoying dancing.
At the end of the entertainment refreshments of mulled wine and mince pies were served and Secret Santa gifts were given out. An enjoyable Christmas celebration and a fitting end to a successful year at St Johns WI.

2018
JANUARY 2018
Graham Horn, a Blue Badge Guide, gave an interesting talk for our first meeting of 2018. This is a second career for Graham and he enlightened us with details of the training involved to achieve his badge. Graham covers the South West, South and South East of England areas and his varied tours include many historical sites and a Midsomer Murders tour.

FEBRUARY 2018
We enjoyed learning the craft of Iris folding, which involves arranging and layering strips of paper in a spiral pattern that resembles the iris of a camera lens. Members created greeting cards with their new skill.
​
Members of the walking group enjoyed a walk this month, which included a venue used for filming 'Downton Abbey'.
​
MARCH 2018
Tim Morris gave a talk and slide presentation on Brooklands Museum in the 2nd Century, which was followed by a successful visit by members to Brooklands Museum.

APRIL 2018
We enjoyed trying a new craft called Zentangle, which is a relaxing and fun way to create images by drawing structured patterns called tangles. Tangles are created with combinations of dots, lines, curves and orbs drawn on a small piece of paper called a 'tile'. Once all members had completed a tile, they were placed together to form a mosaic.

Members gave feedback on their participation in the 'Earth Hour' (on Saturday 24th March), which involved turning all lights off for an hour.
​
MAY 2018 (Resolution Meeting & Competition)
The Resolution was discussed and voted upon followed by tea and a beetle drive. Four entries were received for the annual Eileen Service Memorial Plate challenge for home baking, which this time was for flapjacks. After judging Helen Tank was declared the winner.
​
JUNE 2018
We had a very interesting talk about Crossrail by Jon Jarrett . We learnt that the new Elizabeth line would improve journey times and connections across London. The project embraces many innovations including on board wi-fi for up to 1500 passengers.
​
Members were reminded of the Centenary celebration evening at RHS Wisley where our Pollinator would be exhibited for all to see.

JULY 2018
Summer Holidays - No meeting, trip to Blenheim Palace

AUGUST 2018 (Birthday meeting)
We celebrated our birthday in style with a cake made by one of our members and entertainment provided by The Melody Gal, Tracey Martin. We enjoyed a range of music from the 60s and 70s, singing and dancing along.

SEPTEMBER 2018
Imogen Middleton gave a very interesting and enthusiastic presentation on "Surrey in the Great War", including local information and newspaper reports from the Surrey History Centre archives.
​
OCTOBER 2018
Dr Judith Hill gave a very interesting talk on "Victorian Life Upstairs and Downstairs", including the hierarchy of servants, the numbers employed in the grandest houses, and the changes over the years. Sheila Clark thanked Judith for a very enjoyable presentation.

NOVEMBER 2018 (Annual Meeting, games & competition)
Annual Meeting & Games. President's Rose Bowl Competition (theme: recycled shirt). The AGM was well attended. Two members joined the committee for the first time and Helen was elected as President. The annual report was read by the secretary and outlined the diverse activities members had enjoyed during the past year. Following this the members were set a team challenge to solve jigsaw puzzles.

DECEMBER 2018
Christmas Quiz: Elizabeth kindly set the questions and asked some challenging informative and humorous questions. The quiz was followed by social time with warm mince pies and mulled wine. Secret Santa: Jan gave out the Christmas gifts provided by members. Carol singing with song sheets accompanied by Jane on the keyboard.
